Make a list of random words:

Yes
Hello
Daylight
Winter

You
Window
Keyboard

Then write a contrasting word next to each original word.

Yes / No
Hello / Goodbye
Daylight / Darkness
Winter / Summer
Action / Procrastination
Lips / Mouth
You / Me
Window / Door
Keyboard / Monitor

Next, write some sentences with at least one pair of contrasting words.

"I took my cocker spaniel Bella to the park for a walk, and saw my friend David jogging on the road with his labrador, Buddy."

Here are the contrasts:

Cocker spaniel / Labrador
Bella / Buddy
I / David
Walk / jog
Park / road

Next time you're facing a blank page:

Write whatever is on your mind and try to incorporate as many contrasting words as you can.

Then keep going!

This exercise was taught by Robert Fritz in his legendary creating workshops.

Even the students who had no desire to write were able to create interesting sentences from a blank page.

Fritz recently published a book that includes this exercise and others.

It’s called The Path of Least Resistance for Artists.

Get yourself a copy - it’s a bargain!
